These same issues come into play for many of us who have home-based occupations where we need home office supplies and even those who report for work after a session of remote work and we need regular office supplies.

Having the right office supplies to meet the needs of workers and students can make all the difference in daily success. Workflow is much smoother if things are available and can be found when needed, like desk accessories, file cabinets with file folders, classroom supplies for the teacher and the student, etc.

Our daughter, Heidi, has had a preschool for over 20 years. We’ve watched her as she prepares her classroom for the next year’s sessions that will start soon. Over the years she’s developed an outstanding curriculum for her three and four-year-old students. Having a classroom organization in place to support what she’s teaching is critical.

She’s been able to apply her creativity skills so the kids’ ability to learn basic math, language arts, communication, and other skills comes more naturally, and having the necessary classroom supplies has proven to make all the difference.

Why do people love back-to-school shopping?

People do back-to-school shopping for a variety of reasons. It allows families to stock up on essential supplies like notebooks, pens, crayons, index cards, permanent markers, binders for important documents, and backpacks that will be needed throughout the school year. Many of these items used to be regular educational supplies the schools made available. We’ve all learned that in many cases, teachers are having to bring these items to class.

When you shop at the beginning of the school year, families can ensure they have everything they need to start the school year off on the right foot. THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON: back-to-school shopping often happens with sales promotions and discounts that can be real motivators. This provides an opportunity for families to save money on school supplies and other necessities.

Know Your Needs

Before diving into the world of back-to-school deals, it’s crucial for preppers to know their needs. Take inventory of your current emergency supplies and identify any gaps or areas that require replenishment. Consider items such as food, water, first aid supplies, hygiene products, batteries, flashlights, hand sanitizers and dispensers, toners, and other essentials that can be purchased during back-to-school sales. It may also be time to replace some of those electrical devices, whether it’s a new laptop, walker-talkies, weather radio, or

Bulk Buying and Stockpiling

Back-to-school sales often include bulk deals, which present an excellent opportunity for preppers to stockpile necessary items. When purchasing items like notebooks, pens, pencils, and other school supplies, consider buying in larger quantities. This approach allows you to save money while ensuring a sufficient supply of essential items for your emergency kit. How to Keep Track of Your Stockpile Inventory

Repurposing School Supplies

Preppers are known for their resourcefulness, and back-to-school sales provide them with an array of versatile items. Look for items that can be repurposed for emergency situations. For example, backpacks can be used to carry emergency supplies during evacuation scenarios. Lunchboxes can serve as compact storage containers for edible goods. Take advantage of deals on bandages, antiseptic creams, pain relievers, and other essential medical supplies your family, students, and possibly an employee can use.

Make sure you check for discounts on over-the-counter medications that can be useful in emergency situations. Of course, you always ensure that any medication purchases are within their expiration dates.

Food and Water Storage

Preppers know the importance of having a reliable food and water supply during emergencies. Back-to-school deals can help in this regard as well. Look for discounts on reusable water bottles, water filters, and food storage containers. Consider purchasing non-perishable food items such as canned goods, granola bars, and snacks that have a long shelf life. Take advantage of bulk deals on these items to build up your emergency food supply.

Communication and Power Sources

  1. Schools start here sometime the week of August 7 (depending on the district) and I usually wait until the stores put the school supplies on sale. I’ve gotten backpacks for as low as $1.25 each. the soft sided lunch boxes make a nice first aid kit. The zippered, 3-ring binder pencil pockets make a nice place to store flash drives in emergency binders (of course binders will be on clearance also) and the pencil pockets can be used to add cash or other small items to your emergency binders. I like the zippered binders with a shoulder strap for my emergency binder and those usually go down as low as $5. Hand sanitizer can be discounted as much as 90%. Around here you have to be quick with the clearance sales since the state on the other side of the river’s schools start 2 or 3 weeks later and a lot of those folks are hitting the sales before school starts.

  2. When we had four kids in school, the back to school shopping involved an overnight trip to Reading, Pennsylvania. Factory outlet stores were a new thing 40 years ago, and it allowed us to buy current sizes along with the next size up at clearance prices. One day, four kids was a whirlwind shopping, but it worked. These were real Factory outlets, not the fancy mall stores now. Often I found Christmas presents, giving me a jump start. I still stockpile even now that it is just the two of us.

    1. Hi Chris, I had four girls and boy does this bring back great memories shopping for back to school clothes and supplies. It was great to buy the “next size” for growth of the kids. We could get nicer jackets when they were marked way down for cold weather. Those were the days! Linda

  3. I have been doing a lot of thinking about what to buy at this time of year. I know all the things in your list but I was looking at your school supply list and I guess this would be for those who have children who are voracious readers like I was as a child (still am) or those who are homeschool. Look for on sale books anytime you go shopping. I have a idea the powers that be will make something happen to keep us in line with their thinking and i f you are like me you will thumb your nose at them. The best thing you can do for small children is buy books they can read and workbooks that you can get at the Grocery store or walmarts or teachers stores. Then if something happens you will have the ability to teach your child at home. Another thing would be if you can afford it is to get Solar. I will not go another year with at least 20 power outages and one that lasted 3 weeks. We were so cold and my husband bought a small generator to use for the bedrooms because my husband daughter and I use Cpap machines and I use Oxygen. I am glad I have oxygen tanks extra. But I try to only use them in real emergencies.

    1. HI Jackie electricity is critical for you and your family. Stay safe and do what you can to be prepared for more power outages should they hit you area. Linda
