Have you ever gone to a restaurant and tried something like an English Muffin, and you fell in love with it? There have been a few places that I have tried an English Muffin that I enjoyed, but I wanted to make them at home for Mark and me. These Sourdough English Muffins are not only delicious, but they are better than those at any restaurant I’ve ever been to. The more you make these, the easier they get!

Sourdough English Muffins are really great for breakfast. You can make a nice breakfast sandwich with these muffins, or you can also put some jam or jelly on them as a delicious treat. Mark loves these and it makes me happy because it’s something he can grab and go and be on his way. If you like easy, then these muffins are totally for you!

Step One

Take your starter out of the fridge. Stir, and let the jar sit on the countertop until it reaches room temperature. (Normally 1-2 hours). In case you missed how to make my sourdough starter, How To Make A Sourdough Starter + Bread

Step Two

Pour approximately 6 tablespoons of starter into your mixing bowl. Add warm water, flour, honey, and salt. Mix well by hand or with a mixer. The dough may be sticky.

I use a plastic bag to butter my bowl to let the dough rise.

Butter your bowl and your hands and mound the dough into a ball. Cover with plastic wrap or a wet towel. Let it rise 6-12 hours.

Grease the countertop and roll out the dough so you can cut the shapes of the Sourdough English Muffins into 3-inch circles.

Place some parchment paper on your cookie sheet and sprinkle some cornmeal evenly on the paper. After cutting the muffins place them on the parchment paper, then sprinkle cornmeal over the top of the muffins. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 60 minutes.

Step Seven

Preheat a greased cast-iron skillet over low to medium heat or an electric skillet to 350 degrees. Cook the muffins for about 10 minutes on each side.

Final Product

When thoroughly cooked the temperature inside of the muffins should read 190 degrees with an instant-read thermometer. After cooking, cool the muffins on a cooling rack.

    ***Feed your sourdough starter in a quart mason jar with l scant cup flour and 1/2 cup of filtered water. Stir until thoroughly mixed and place the jar on your countertop for 4-5 hours before placing the jar in the refrigerator.

This is nice because you can make them ahead of time and enjoy them all week. I make a batch on the weekend and then we have them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner all week.

You may be wondering why I choose to make the Sourdough version of English muffins? Well, anything sourdough tastes better to me. But it is also a little healthier to make the sourdough version of baked goods and bread. It’s safe to say that the lower phytate levels make the bread more digestible for the human body.

When I have the grandkids over we make Linda’s Eggs and Muffins using mason jar rings in the frying pan. You can see how cracking an egg in the mason jar works well, scrambled eggs not so much. It’s all about the egg in a circle, right?

    1. Here is the link to making the sourdough starter. If you ask some of your friends or neighbors you might find one who already has a start that they’d be willing to share with you; I personally have a start that over 150 years old that has a great flavor (its traveled the world) and is very robust to the point I only have to use it once every few months without having to do any feedings and you could end up with a start that is very strong but I’d definitely would make your own start until then.

  2. I have to try this! I’ve been making “McMuffins” for some time for the gkids and the family. They’re great for travelling. I have frozen patties and storebought muffins, tho. I fry the eggs and break the yoke before putting them on the muffins. I think the idea of using the canning jar lids is brilliant. I’m definitely doing that the next time I make these! See? ALWAYS something wonderful from everyone of your postings!

    1. Hi Robbie, I buy the frozen sausage patties at Costco for my “McMuffins”. I love making circle eggs!! It’s so fun, I think your grandkids will love it! The canning rings turned upside down work great! Linda

      1. I bought my frozen patties at Walmart because they’re quite large, perfect size for the muffins. I’ve made the circle eggs before but the “ring” I use is a Disney one and it leaks out the bottom and makes a mess. It was just easier to fold it over. I’m definitely going to try the canning rings tho-that sounds perfect.

    I made these last evening and they smelled marvelous. My husband tried them this morning and said they were the best muffins he ever tasted. His was just all the scraps rolled into a muffin and he still loved it. I promised to make a double batch tomorrow so we can have them over the weekend. They won’t last long enough to make it into the freezer.
