Today I’m sharing my caramel apple crisp recipe with you. You can buy a caramel sauce to go with it or make my homemade caramel recipe below. Life is good when it’s homemade, right?

I can remember many instances where my kids preferred my homemade food over anything store-bought. This Caramel Apple Crisp with Homemade Caramel Sauce is going to be a favorite for many years to come.

When I think of caramel apple crisp, I think of something warm and delicious. It actually takes me back to my childhood and when I would have apple pie as a kid.

There is a distinguished taste with anything that is made with apples! You can make some very yummy desserts to share with family and friends. With the holidays coming up, this Caramel Apple Crisp is something that everyone will be craving.

How to Make Caramel Apple Crisp

Life wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t make at least one homemade Caramel Apple Crisp in our lifetime. I’m going to show you how to do these steps one by one.

Step One

Start with gathering the ingredients so you are ready to assemble this caramel apple crisp. If you have an apple peeler it will make your life so much easier. This one will peel, core, and slice those juicy fresh apples.

Step Two

In a medium-sized bowl combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Use a whisk to make sure it is thoroughly mixed.

Add cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter.

In a large bowl combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss apple slices in mixture. Make sure to coat them thoroughly.

When butter is mixed in (about the size of peas) add in oats and chopped pecans in dry topping mixture. Place in refrigerator while you make the filling.

Cover the apples with the topping mixture and bake for 45-48 minutes at 350 degrees.

Step Seven

Now, make the caramel sauce. Combine the brown sugar, butter and half and half into a small pan. Slowly bring to a boil, stirring the entire time.

Boil for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens (it will thicken more once it is cool, so keep that in mind). When at desired thickness, remove from heat and stir in vanilla.

This can be used immediately as a sauce or chilled for dipping apples. Simply reheat to thin it out. This can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Step Eight

Just before serving, drizzle more caramel sauce onto the warm apple crisp. Serve with vanilla ice cream and a side of caramel sauce for dipping.

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup pecans, chopped
Filling Ingredients
  • 5 cups of apples, peeled, cored and sliced. I used 5 large Granny Smith ones today. Any variety will work.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or easy recipe below)

  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla

    Topping Instructions:

    In a medium-sized bowl combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Use a whisk to make sure it is thoroughly mixed. Add cubed butter and combine with a pastry cutter. When butter is mixed in (about the size of peas) add in oats and chopped pecans. Place in refrigerator while you make filling.

    Filling Instructions:

    Peel and thinly slice five large apples (5 cups). In a large bowl combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss apple slices in mixture. Make sure to coat them thoroughly. Pour into a 9-inch greased baking dish. Add a small drizzle of caramel sauce to apples (you want just a hint of caramel flavor in the dish). Remove topping from the refrigerator and evenly coat the apple mixture. Bake for 40-48 minutes. The topping should be browned, juicy hot, and bubbly. Cool slightly.
