Organize Your Finances 101

I used to do Private Banking for clients at a bank in Salt Lake City, Utah about 17 years ago. I also did mortgages for those same clients when I opened my own mortgage company for another 15 years. I had some clients who were organized with their “financial stuff” and more that were unorganized. The reason I want to explain why I am doing today’s post is because I have found over the years more people need help organizing their financial stuff than they realize. Oh, and some people could care less to organize anything. I sometimes wonder why I am such an organized freak…….is it because I am left handed? I have to laugh, I really don’t know why I love to organize stuff.

Please picture this….because I was a banker and mortgage broker I would need to ask my clients for tax returns, pay stubs, bank statements and investment statements (for any loans or lines of credit). I soon learned the clients that were organized and those who were not. We are all so different in how we prioritize things. I would always give my clients hard cardboard folders filled with their tax returns and W-2′s, 1098′s and 1099′s before returning the items to them. Most would smile and thank me for “organizing” their stuff.

I think my brain never stops thinking up “projects”…….just saying. So then I started making sets of the following folders for all my clients when I did a loan for them. Then I started giving the sets as a gift to family members and friends. Here is the list I use in alphabetical order:

BANKING

CARS

INSURANCE-CARS

INSURANCE-HEALTH & LIFE

INVESTMENTS-IRA’S

MEDICAL RECORDS

MORTGAGE/RENTAL STATEMENTS

PAYCHECKS

PROPERTY TAX INFO

RECEIPTS-DISPOSABLE

RECEIPTS-LARGE ITEMS

TAX DEDUCTIBLE RECEIPTS

UTILITIES

TAX RETURNS 2012

TAX RETURNS 2013

TAX RETURNS 2014

TAX RETURNS 2015

TAX RETURNS 2016

Organize, Finances

I use a two hole punch…this comes from my banking/mortgage days. I hope this helps you get organized for 2013! I am going to mail a set to one of our readers that comments on how this would help them get organized. Let me know if you could use one of these sets and why. After I choose the reader with the best comment I will ship it to them! The lucky reader would only need to purchase a two hole punch.  Yes, that is duct tape holding the hole punch in the right position! I would love to hear from you! Here’s to organizing in 2013!

Congratulations to Teresa S! She’s the winner today! January 9, 2013

WonderMill Grain Mill Review and Giveaway

Wondermill Wheat Grinder

A couple of months ago I blogged and raved about how much I loved using my WonderMill Grain Mill.  I had used another grain mill, but it made such a mess in my kitchen I had to do it outside in the backyard.  I love that this mill is way less messy and a lot more quiet than a lot of other mills I have used.  I can do it right in my kitchen.

We participated in the Grain Mill Wagon Challenge making Chocolate Marshmallow Cookies , Blueberry Oat Flour Muffins,  and the Whole Wheat Apple Bread.   I use it now to make my weekly loaves of bread, and have had fun grinding up rice, popcorn and oats!  I even made Gluten free bagels the other day using rice flour.  They were delicious!   You can read more about the WonderMill here.

WonderMill wants one Food Storage Moms reader to be able to have a WonderMill Grain Mill of their very own so you can experience this wonderful mill! One winner will win an electric WonderMill Grain Mill valued at over $250! Just enter to win using the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway will run until December 6th, 2012 at midnight.
